Lately, it has become known that Twitter and Meta, the technological companies, are planning massive layoffs in the short term worldwide and have put the sector in the spotlight. And among them, who has joined these massive layoffs, has been Amazon. However, today we will talk to you about Meta.
The company led by Mark Zuckerberg now has 11,000 fewer employees in its workforce, which translates into fewer people to carry forward the development of all the projects it had underway before starting with the latest staff cuts.
As a consequence of the decision Meta has taken, some development projects have just been suspended indefinitely and we will mention two of the most important ones:
Portal and Meta Watch smartwatch.
The first victim is Portal, a smart speaker with a display that the company started selling in 2018 and that had four different models: Portal, Portal+, Portal TV, and Portal Go. This one did not succeed among consumers, as there were other very similar devices on the market such as amazon’s Echo Show 8.
If we talk about the smart watch, we must say that this was one of the company’s big plans. Little was known about the Meta Watch, but it was said that it would incorporate sports and messaging functions to face the Apple Watch.
One of the most interesting features of this device was that it was going to have a front-facing camera (with a notch). The social function was going to be very present, allowing video calls directly from the device and without the need to have it linked to a smartphone.
It is not known how many people make up the Portal and Meta Watch team, what we do know is that Bosworth said that these employees will become part of Reality Labs, a company that at the moment, generates only 1% of Meta’s revenue and accumulates operating losses of more than $ 9 billion since the beginning of the year.
That said, the good days for this division seem far from over as the company admits that making the Metaverse profitable is one of its long-term plans.
